Summary

A university in Kyiv (Ukraine) offers microwave radio-absorbing coatings based on islet conducting films of nanometer thickness (meta-material). The coating advantage is the small thickness and broad band absorption of electromagnetic radiation. The organization is looking for industrial partners interested in further studies and the proposed industrial coatings.

Description

The main elements of radio absorbing coatings are the islet conducting metal films of nanometer thickness which is much less than the thickness of the skin layer in a selected range of electromagnetic waves.

Absorbing and reflecting properties of these layers are connected with the influence of size effects on their resistive properties. It was obtained more than 90% absorption of power of the incident electromagnetic radiation in the 8-mm and 3 cm waveband for coating comprising only one layer of metal with high conductivity and a thickness of about 10 nm

It is assumed that the absorption efficiency will be enhanced for the coating comprising multiple layers of metal. Similar results are expected in other ranges of electromagnetic waves due to the weak frequency dependence of the observed effect.

It is assumed that the total thickness of the protective coating will not exceed 1-2 mm.

Advantages and Innovations

Advantages of the coatings are in small thickness and while simultaneously in broad band absorption of electromagnetic radiation as a result one has the improvement of the coating quality and the reduction of its cost.

For producing of the coating applied high-vacuum deposition methods. These methods provide good repeatability properties of coatings and ensure minimum flow rate materials due to the high degree of control of process parameters.
